Summer means FUN. Fun means outdoor gatherings with friends. An outdoor gathering with friends requires a barbecue and tasty barbecue deserves a GREAT BEER! (If I must admit, a pool couldn't hurt either.)

Ballast Point's Watermelon Dorado is that great beer, my fellow beer enthusiasts. Now, you may be thinking to yourself, "How can a ten percent hop-bomb be the perfect brew for a backyard fiesta?". Ok, so maybe you didn't say "backyard fiesta," but you see where I'm going with this. Friends, I have asked myself the same question and I have come to share the answer. Ready? Let's go!

Watermelon Dorado pours a shade of hazy copper with a thick white head that leaves behind a good amount of lacing. The nose is something of epic proportions. Super fruity with an almost gummy candy quality. Watermelon Jolly Ranchers also come to mind. Notes of lime, pineapple, and grapefruit sneak their way in as well. Wow! Let's cross our fingers that it tastes just as good as it smells!

Oh yeah! Huge notes of ripe and juicy watermelon are all in your face right off the bat. Super flavorful. Super refreshing. Super creamy. Almost instantly, I'm reaching again for my glass. It's here, on my second sip, that things take a left turn. An abundance of piney, earthy hops begin attacking my palate with full force. Sure, the watermelon is there and its delicious, but this is a big beer. The hop assault soon fades, leaving behind notes of pineapple, banana, cucumber, caramel, bread, sweet malts, and a lingering barnyard funkiness A la Brettanomyces. Strange. Delicious, but strange.

On one hand, this is a watermelon flavored beer that actually delivers real watermelon flavor. Kudos to Ballast Point for this! On the other hand, this is primarily a hop-focused, high gravity beer that is jam packed with an array of flavors, some odd. I'd be lying if I said this wasn't a tough sell. Personally, I like this beer. If you're into beer exploration and you're up for having a couple while you tend to the masterpiece you've got going on the grill, this is what you should be drinking. Cheers!
