Sawtooth Nitro by Left Hand Brewing
Available at Wise Guys for $11.99 per 6pk nr
Beer Style: ESB – Extra Special Bitter
ESB’s are more balanced and more aggressive bitters. They tend to be low in carbonation and contain a nice malt backbone. The key here is that these beers are balanced. (See Goose Island Honkers for a standard American ESB. Sawtooth has Nitrogen added.
Appearance: Dark amber in color, thin head, nice lacing yet odd looking pour due to nitrogen addition.
Aroma: Caramel notes, noble hops
Taste: Reminds me of a bitter version of Sam Adam‘s Boston Lager, but with a creamy smooth silkiness from the added nitrogen
Mouth-feel: Creamy and smooth (thanks again to the nitrogen)
Overall: I love the concept of adding nitrogen to a beer to get that draft effect and add creaminess to a beer. It works with Left Hand’s Nitro Milk Stout and enhances the flavor of that beer. It’s not the same effect with Sawtooth, as nitrogen here only adds to the mouthfeel.
I’m not sure why Left Hand pursued a Nitro version of this beer; I would love to see what nitrogen would do to their Stranger APA or another IPA instead.
If you are a fan of ESB’s, you should try Sawtooth for certain.
