Tallgrass Brewing Company
So Hopslam season has come and gone. What are you going to do? Cry about it? Heck no! You're going to tie your shoes tight and get down here to check out the latest from Manhattan, Kansas' own Tallgrass Brewing Company!
Newly distributed to Indiana, Tallgrass has been pumping out exquisite brews since 2007 and their Imperial IPA 'The Grizz' is no exception.
Coming in at 9.5% ABV, The Grizz pours a golden and somewhat orangeish shade with a fingers worth of off-white head that leaves behind a good amount of lacing. The nose exhibits a meld of fruity goodness with a strong presence of lemon, papaya, peach and mango. So far, so good. Let's dive in!
Right off the bat you are hit with a boatload of citrusy hops with notes of grapefruit, peaches and oranges dominating. This juicy fruitiness eventually fades and a combination of piny hops and sweet malts hurls itself to the forefront. This combination lingers on the palate for quite some time. You might also notice a certain lemon tea quality sneaking up on the finish which I find to be both interesting and refreshing. A slight presence of alcohol is evident on the finish, though this is not at all unusual for a beer of such high gravity and does not affect its seeming crushability. The Grizz is nothing short of a well-balanced offering that delivers a super creamy body with a solid amount of carbonation that holds the array of flavors together nice and tight. Bravo!
Overall, I'd say that The Grizz is a must try for all of the hop heads out there as well as those of you who are wanting to venture into Imperial IPA territory. My reasoning for the latter being that in comparison to many other brews of this style, The Grizz is extremely approachable, never finding itself bordering on the cusp of being a barleywine. And, again, extremely refreshing and unmistakably crushable.
