Floyd's Folly Scottish Ale by Cutters Brewing Co.
$10.97 for a 6pk
As the seasons change, I thought we would look at a darker beer and one from a newer Indiana brewery, Floyd’s Folly Scottish Ale by Cutters Brewing Co.
Scottish style ales are one of my favorite styles of beer. Scottish Ale is a style of beer with a longer boil time in the kettle to caramelize the wort. This gives the beer the malty (at times slightly chocolate) profile and its copper or darker brown color. Scottish Ales are a full bodied and full flavored beer.
Appearance - Dark amber in color. Nearly opaque with about a 1/2 inch head from the pour and some lacing.
Smell - A little cocoa and maybe some dark fruit or raisins.
Taste - Sweet, with a smooth chocolaty malt; consistent with this style. And in the background, some caramel and molasses flavors as well. Very well balanced.
Mouthfeel - Some carbonation, very smooth with a creamy texture.
Overall – A very nice beer representing this style. I tend to only drink Scottish Ales in cooler weather, partly because they are fuller bodied beer and because the alcohol content can be higher. This one checks in at 8%. This is right in the style of Scottish Ales. It is very malty and rich, but smooth brew. I would highly recommend this for anyone looking for a Scottish style ale.
