Barleywine Ale by Smuttynose Brewing Company
Beer Style: Barleywine
Barleywines are beer, not wines.
American barley wines are often loaded with malt and hops and carry a high alcohol content. They also have the makeup to be aged such as wine. In fact, some improve with age such as Stone’s Old Guardian.
American versions of this beer are often made with hops containing high alpha acids. The higher the acids, the more bitter the taste. English barleywines are more malt forward with less focus on hops.
Appearance: Dark. Orange-brown in color, and opaque with a 1⁄4” head. This has the lacing of a big beer.
Smell: Fruits, caramel, hops
Taste: Wow! This is on huge brew! Taste of sweet fruits and malts with dry and bitter hops on the finish
Mouth-feel: Smooth, creamy, full, & thick--just like a barleywine should be.
Overall: Smuttynose hits it out of the park with this one! I anxiously await the release of barleywines and they are released from December to February. This beer delivers and must be added to my must-have barley wine list. Be prepared to pace yourself with this beer. It clocks in with an 11% ABV. Surprisingly, it only has 65 IBUs.
Smuttynose Barleywine is available in 22 oz. bottles at WiseGuys for $6.97.
This is a limited release, so get yours soon. I would highly recommend buying 2. One to drink AND one to age for a year.
